Established in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward-looking comprehensive research university renowned worldwide for its excellence in education, groundbreaking research, and global impact. As a university with a worldwide footprint, CUHK’s vibrant community boasts around 30,000 students, more than 3,000 teaching and research staff, and over 250,000 alumni from across the globe. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through eight Faculties and a Graduate School, including one of Asia’s top medical schools. Research lies at the heart of CUHK. A champion of research and innovation that creates value and brings benefits to society, CUHK has been dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer in the 21st century. Among its most notable research achievements are:

  • Revolutionary advances in liquid biopsy technology, enabling non-invasive prenatal testing and early cancer detection.
  • Biotechnological enhancements in soybean cultivation, addressing global food security challenges.
  • AI and robotics innovations powering biomedical breakthroughs and smart city applications.
  • Network coding theory, reshaping data transmission and network applications.

CUHK is home to five State Key Laboratories entrusted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and leads 13 Areas of Excellence research projects funded by Hong Kong University Grants Committee. It also houses six InnoHK Centres, driving frontier research in AI, robotics, and medicine and health under the Hong Kong Government’s InnoHK initiative. CUHK had been ranked the most innovative university in Hong Kong for four years in a row by Reuters’ Asia Pacific’s Most Innovative Universities since 2016.

CUHK attaches great importance to global engagement and is active in fostering multidisciplinary collaborations and partnerships with academic institutions and industries around the world. It has formal partnerships with over 490 institutions spanning more than 40 countries/regions, ranging from teaching and research collaborations to faculty and student exchanges. It also actively participates in national and international academic alliances such as the Worldwide Universities Network, Association of Pacific Rim Universities, Association of University Presidents of China, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance.
